Why Should You Visit Newfoundland?

There’s a certain kind of magic you feel the moment you arrive in Newfoundland. It’s raw, windy, salty, and real. You will fall in love with it!

Here’s why I think you should visit Newfoundland:

The Ocean Is Everywhere

  • You’re never far from the Atlantic.

  • The cliffs are dramatic and humbling — especially around St. John's.

  • Watching the waves crash at Cape Spear (the easternmost point in North America!) feels like standing at the edge of the world.

It makes your problems feel smaller — in the best way.

Wildlife Encounters

  • Icebergs drifting by in early summer (actual ICEBERGS).

  • Whales surfacing near fishing boats like it’s no big deal.

  • Puffins nesting along the cliffs at places like Witless Bay Ecological Reserve.

  • Bald eagles soaring overhead when you least expect it.

It feels wild in a way that’s increasingly rare.

The Music — It’s the Heartbeat

  • Walk into a pub in downtown St. John's and someone will be playing fiddle.

  • Strangers will sing together like they’ve known each other for years.

  • The traditional Irish-influenced sound is alive and thriving.

  • You don’t just listen — you join in.

You will never feel more welcomed by people you just met.

The Colourful Row Houses (Jelly Bean Row!)

  • Brightly painted homes stacked along steep hills.

  • Fog rolling in and out like a movie set.

  • Every corner feels photo-worthy without trying.

It’s SO charming!

The Food Is Comforting

  • Fresh seafood chowder that tastes like it came straight from the ocean (because it did).

  • Cod tongues — yes, really.

  • Toutons with molasses for breakfast.

  • Local bakeapples (cloudberries!) that you won’t easily find elsewhere.

It’s homemade food at its best.

The People

The people are Newfoundland's greatest treasure.

  • Conversations with shop owners can often turn into life stories.

  • Getting directions often includes a local history lesson.

  • Their distinct Newfoundland accent — warm and musical.

  • Their humour, which is contagious.

There’s a deep-rooted culture of kindness and storytelling here.

When you visit Newfoundland, you will see beautiful scenery but will leave thinking about Newfoundland music, culture and the friendly people you met and the connections you made.
